Nato a Trieste, ha studiato a Torino e Milano dove, nel 1962, si è laureato in Fisica. Borsista per alcuni anni all’INFN di Frascati, nel 1965  è stato Research Fellow all'Università di Princeton New Jersey e, negli anni 1966-1978,  ricercatore presso il CNEN (ora ENEA) di Frascati ove ha diretto il laboratorio di Fisica dei plasmi confinati magneticamente. Dal 1978 è Amministratore delegato della casa editrice Zanichelli, carica che, dal 1988, ricopre anche nella casa editrice Loescher. Nel 1994 ha fondato, presiedendola, l'Associazione per la lettura (Progetto “Giralibro”). Dal 2006 è membro onorario di Oplepo. Scia in discesa e fondo; coltiva ulivi vicino a Lucca.
